When Can I Start Exercising After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Why should you exercise after gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is part of a holistic health program – and getting back to exercising will help you achieve your health goals! Research shows that people who exercise more after a sleeve gastrectomy will:
- Lose more weight
- Have better body composition
- Have improved fitness
- Most importantly, be more likely to keep weight off in the long term!
As well as this – exercise will also help you:
- Reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and developing several types of common cancers.
- Increase your quality of life
- Improve your mood
- Get better sleep
Dr Peter Hamer, and his team on the Central Coast, regularly perform gastric sleeve surgery, with patients experiencing amazing results!
How quickly can I start to exercise after the surgery?
You should start with gentle walking with permission from your doctor. Dr Peter Hamer and his health care team will encourage you to get active again. It’s suggested that you try to get up and start moving around as soon as you can. This will help reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery and can help you get rid of trapped wind, which can be a side effect after surgery.
After two weeks or so, and after gaining permission from your doctor, you should be able to gently increase your activity levels; however, you need to avoid heavy lifting or demanding exercise such as running, cycling, lifting or most sports games. Try walking around the Central Coast’s great walking areas such as Terrigal, Ettalong, Gosford, the Entrance and the many other beautiful tracks around the Central Coast.
When can I return to normal exercise after gastric sleeve surgery?
After a month, you should be able to gently increase the intensity of your exercise to include heavy lifting and demanding exercise. You should listen to your body, and ease back into it. Every body will react differently.
The friendly and highly experienced team at Dr Peter Hamer’s clinic is here to help you to get moving safely and enjoy life to the fullest.
